What the woodwind family does in a song
Woodwinds are the instruments with a reed or an air edge: flute, clarinet, oboe, bassoon and the saxophones. In an orchestra they play the soft, singing lines above the strings. In a pop song they are often a flute under the chorus, a clarinet in a jazzy intro, or a sax riff. Film composers lean on them for tenderness and for color.
Most people who want them alone are one of three kinds: students learning a line, arrangers checking a voicing, and sample makers hunting for a clean phrase.
Family page, or one instrument?
This page keeps the whole family together. That is handy when a line passes from flute to clarinet to oboe, because you hear it complete. For one voice, go to the Flute Extractor, Clarinet Extractor, Oboe Extractor, Bassoon Extractor or Saxophone Extractor. Horns made of brass are on the Brass Extractor, and the Wind Instrument Extractor covers both groups.
Limits you should expect
Oboe and clarinet have close tones, and a flute high in its range can sound like a whistle or a synth lead. Quiet woodwinds under a full orchestra are the hardest case, since strings play in the same range. Listen to both files before you commit.
