Where you hear a clarinet
The clarinet has a woody, warm sound and a very wide range, from low and dark to bright and shrill. It is a staple of swing and Dixieland, klezmer and the Balkan folk bands, concert bands and orchestras. Some pop and film songs use it for a playful or a sleepy line.
Students use the Clarinet file to hear how a player shapes a phrase. Arrangers check an entry in a chord. People who sample old records use it to lift a short run clear of the drums.
Clarinet, oboe or saxophone
The clarinet and the saxophone both use a single reed, and in a jazz band they can share a line, so the sax sometimes bleeds in. The oboe is thinner and nasal and often plays right beside it in orchestral music. To compare by ear, open the Saxophone Extractor or the Oboe Extractor. The low end of a clarinet can overlap with the Bassoon Extractor, and a high clarinet can overlap with the Flute Extractor. For the whole family, use the Woodwind Extractor.
Best and worst cases
A clarinet over a rhythm section separates well. Old, noisy or mono recordings are harder, since the hiss and the limited range hide the tone the model relies on.
