What counts as a sound effect?
Sound effects, or SFX, are the non-musical, non-speech sounds in a recording: whooshes, impacts, hits, risers, stings and the other designed sounds producers lay over music. In a film mix they sit beside the dialogue and the music. In a song, they are the extra textures on top of the instruments.
This tool is built around that idea. It pulls out the layer that is effects and leaves the rest. How much it catches depends on what kind of effect it is and how loud it is in the mix, since "effects" covers a very wide range of sounds.
Two ways to use it
- Keep the effects. Producers and sound designers can grab impacts, transitions and sweeps from a track to build a library or study how they were made.
- Remove the effects. Editors and remixers can take them out to get a cleaner music track, for example for a version with no whooshes under a voiceover.
What to expect
Effects that are loud and clearly separate from the music come out best. Quiet effects, or effects that blend into a synth or a cymbal, are harder, and some will remain in the other file. Because the sound is so varied, the result changes from track to track, so listen to both files before you rely on either.
Related tools handle narrower jobs. If your audio is a film or video soundtrack with speech, the Dialogue, Music and Effects Splitter gives you three stems at once. For the build-up sound before a drop, see the Riser Extractor. For the big trailer hit, use the Braam Extractor.

Yes, that is what the Without sound effects file is for. Results are best when the effects are loud and distinct. Subtle ones may stay.
Does it handle speech?
It is not a speech tool. If speech is in your audio, use the Dialogue, Music and Effects Splitter to get speech as its own file.
