How to split a song into 4 stems

  1. Upload the song. MP3, WAV, M4A or FLAC, up to 10 minutes. You sign in with Google the first time.
  2. Press Split the song. The button shows the price before anything runs: 1 credit for every minute of music. New accounts start with 5 credits, enough for one song up to 5 minutes long. Most songs take 1 to 3 minutes, longer when the queue is busy.
  3. Mix and download. Each part gets its own row. Switch rows on or off to hear any combination, and download the ones you want as MP3 files at 320 kbps. If processing fails, your credits are returned.

What you get

  • Vocals. The singing, lead and backing together.
  • Drums. The whole kit as one file.
  • Bass. Bass guitar, synth bass, anything that holds the low end.
  • Other. Everything that is not vocals, drums or bass: guitars, keys, strings, horns, pads.
  • Instrumental. The song with the vocals removed, so you do not have to add three rows together.

Four stems is the classic layout for remixing, practising and DJ work, because these are the parts most people ask for first.

How this differs from the home page

The stem splitter on the home page gives you more parts in the console. This page uses a model called Demucs4 HT, which is described as fast, with relatively good quality for bass, drums and other. Pick it when four parts are all you need and you would like a quick result. If your guitar or piano is buried in the "Other" row and you need it alone, go to the home page, or try the Every Instrument Splitter to see what else is in the song.

When four stems are enough

Bass players mute the Bass row and play along with the rest of the band.

Drummers mute Drums, and can listen to the Drums row alone to learn a groove. For the kick and snare on their own, use the Drum Kit Splitter.

DJs and remixers keep Drums and Bass for a groove and swap the rest.

Singers switch off Vocals and sing over the Instrumental. The Vocal Remover does the same job with two files.

Mixes that are very dense, live recordings and songs with heavy reverb can leave traces of one part inside another. Listen with headphones before you build on a stem.

FAQ

How much does a 4-stem split cost?

1 credit for every minute of the song, shown on the button before you start. New accounts get 5 credits. A failed run is refunded.

Why is there an Instrumental row as well as Other?

Other holds everything except vocals, drums and bass. Instrumental is the whole song without vocals, so it still has the drums and bass in it.

Will the stems be perfectly clean?

No. The model is good, but a part can leave a faint trace in another row, most often in busy or live recordings.

What do I download?

Each row downloads separately as an MP3 at 320 kbps. They are the same length as the song, so they line up in a DAW.
