How to extract the oboe from a song

  1. Add your song. MP3, WAV, M4A or FLAC, up to 10 minutes long. Sign in with Google when asked.
  2. Press Extract the oboe. Cost is 1 credit for every minute of the song, shown on the button first. Your 5 starting credits cover a song of up to 5 minutes. Expect 1 to 3 minutes of waiting, longer if the queue is busy.
  3. Check and save. Open Oboe and Without the oboe one at a time, watch the small waveform beside each reel, then download the ones you want as MP3 files at 320 kbps.

A reedy voice with a long reach

The oboe is a double-reed instrument with a narrow, nasal tone that carries over an orchestra. That is why the orchestra tunes to its note. In film scores it plays the plaintive tune in a quiet scene. In chamber and baroque music it takes a solo line, and now and then a pop or folk song has an oboe in a bridge.

Oboe students use the Oboe file to hear the phrasing of famous solos. Composers listen to how the line sits above the strings. Sample makers go for the exposed opening notes.

Oboe or clarinet?

Clarinet is rounder and a little darker. Oboe is brighter and edgier. In an orchestra they play near each other and can be confused, so run the Clarinet Extractor too when you are not sure. Bassoon is the oboe's low cousin; see the Bassoon Extractor. A very high oboe next to a flute can be tough to tell apart, so the Flute Extractor can help. Saxophone is a single reed with a much bigger sound, on the Saxophone Extractor. Everything together is at the Woodwind Extractor.

Expect some bleed

Oboe solos with a whole string section behind them are the hard case, since violins play in the same range. Exposed solos separate best.

FAQ

How much does it cost to extract an oboe?

1 credit for every minute of the song, shown on the button before it runs. New accounts get 5 credits. If the job fails, credits are returned.

Can it handle orchestral recordings?

Yes, but dense orchestral textures leave more bleed than a solo over a quiet backing.

What formats can I upload?

MP3, WAV, M4A or FLAC up to 10 minutes. Outputs download as MP3 at 320 kbps.

Is the oboe file clean?

Not always. Listen to both files and expect some leftovers.
