How to extract the brass from a song

  1. Choose a file. Drop in an MP3, WAV, M4A or FLAC of up to 10 minutes. You sign in with Google on your first upload.
  2. Press Extract the brass. The button shows what this song will cost, at 1 credit per minute, so you know before you start. New accounts get 5 credits. If the job fails, the credits come back.
  3. Play each reel. The left reel is your original; the other two are Brass and Without the brass. Click a reel to solo it, and download whichever you need as a 320 kbps MP3.

Where brass shows up

Brass is the loud, bright section in funk, soul, ska, big band and Latin music, and the fanfare in film scores. Trumpets, trombones, French horns and tubas are all brass, so this page treats them as one family. Players of a section often learn a part by ear, so a clean Brass file gives them something to loop and write down.

Sampling is the other big use. Producers look for a short horn stab or a held chord and need it without the drums underneath.

Brass or saxophone?

Saxophones are woodwinds even though they are made of metal, and they usually sit in the same horn section. If a sax is part of the line you want, you may find some of it in the Woodwind Extractor or the Saxophone Extractor instead of here. For the whole horn line in one go, use the Wind Instrument Extractor.

Pick one instrument

If you only want one voice, try the Trumpet Extractor, Trombone Extractor, French Horn Extractor or Tuba Extractor. A brass section with trumpets over trombones is often easier to separate from the band than to split into its own players.

What gets left behind

Muted trumpets and soft horn pads can be mistaken for synths. Loud guitars and distorted keyboards occupy the same range as brass and can bleed into the Brass file.

FAQ

How much does it cost to extract brass from a song?

1 credit for every minute of the song, shown on the button before it runs. New accounts get 5 credits. If a job fails, the credits come back.

Can I get just the trumpet or trombone?

Yes. Use the single-instrument pages linked above. This page gives the whole brass family as one file.

Will the brass file be perfectly clean?

No. Dense mixes and live recordings can leave bleed, and some synth sounds can be picked up as brass.

What formats are supported?
