How to extract the trombone from a song

  1. Add your song. MP3, WAV, M4A or FLAC, up to 10 minutes long. Sign in with Google when asked.
  2. Press Extract the trombone. Cost is 1 credit for every minute of the song, shown on the button first. Your 5 starting credits cover a song of up to 5 minutes. Expect 1 to 3 minutes of waiting, longer if the queue is busy.
  3. Check and save. Open Trombone and Without the trombone one at a time, watch the small waveform beside each reel, then download the ones you want as MP3 files at 320 kbps.

What a trombone does in a song

The trombone is the slide instrument of the brass family. Its range sits below the trumpet and above the tuba, so in a horn section it often plays the middle and low notes. In ska and funk it plays chords and bass lines with the trumpets. In New Orleans music it slides and growls. In a film score it is the dark, heavy brass voice.

Players who want to learn a slide line use the Trombone file to hear every glissando. Arrangers check which notes it takes in a chord. Sample makers look for a single low note or a slide.

Trombone, tuba or sax?

The trombone and the baritone sax overlap in range, and in a tight horn section it can be hard to tell who plays which note. Tuba is lower and softer in attack, so check the Tuba Extractor if the line is very low. The French Horn Extractor is the other low-ish brass voice, with a rounder tone. For a high horn line see the Trumpet Extractor, and for a mixed line the Saxophone Extractor or Brass Extractor.

Good and difficult cases

One trombone under a vocal is easy for the model. A full section where four horns play chords together is harder, and the Trombone file may carry bits of the others. Open both files with headphones.
