The ukulele in a song

The ukulele is small, has four nylon strings and a light, cheerful tone. It is usually strummed, so it works as a rhythm instrument and as a quiet harmony bed. You hear it in Hawaiian music, indie folk, acoustic pop, cover videos, beach and summer songs and the sparse tracks where a single strummed instrument holds the chords.

Who wants it alone

  • Beginners who want to see how a strum pattern sits against the beat in a real song, and then hear it with no singer on top.
  • Teachers who make play-along tracks for students.
  • Cover artists who want a version without the ukulele so they can record their own.
  • Video makers who need a light strummed bed without the lyrics.

Ukulele or acoustic guitar?

Both are strummed, so they are the likeliest pair to blur. A ukulele sounds higher, thinner and brighter, with less bass. When an acoustic guitar plays under the ukulele, the guitar may leak into this file, or the reverse. Check against the Acoustic Guitar Extractor on the same song. Solo ukulele over a vocal, with no guitar, separates best.

A strummed ukulele is a series of soft hits, so the edges of each chord can sound a little less crisp after separation. If you will be learning from the file, slow it down in your player.

For other plucked instruments see the Plucked Strings Extractor, or the Mandolin Extractor for a brighter cousin.
