The mandolin in a song

A mandolin has paired strings and a small body, and it is played with a pick. Its signature is the tremolo, a very fast repeated note that sustains a long tone. It also plays quick single-note runs and sharp, chopping chords on the off-beat. You hear it in bluegrass, folk, country, Celtic music, Italian and Greek songs and the rock tracks that borrow a folk color.

Who wants it alone

  • Mandolin students copying a tremolo, a lick or a solo.
  • Bluegrass players learning the chop rhythm that drives the band.
  • Producers who want to turn up or mute a mandolin that is buried.
  • Sample makers looking for a clean chop or run.

Without the mandolin gives you the rest of the band so you can play the part yourself.

Mandolin or acoustic guitar?

An acoustic guitar is strummed with longer, fuller chords. A mandolin is thinner, brighter and higher, with a shimmering sustain. Because both are plucked, bright, acoustic sounds, a strummed guitar can leak into the Mandolin file, and a loud mandolin can leak into the guitar file. If that happens, try the Acoustic Guitar Extractor. Banjo is another near neighbor; see the Banjo Extractor. For all plucked instruments at once, use the Plucked Strings Extractor.
