The double bass in music
The double bass, also called the upright bass, is the biggest and lowest instrument in the string family. In jazz it is plucked with the fingers to walk a bassline under a trio. In bluegrass and rockabilly it slaps and pops. In orchestras it is bowed and doubles the cellos an octave lower. You also hear it in swing, blues, folk and some film music.
Who wants it by itself
- Bass players learning a walking line or a bow part.
- Jazz students transcribing a bassline chord by chord.
- Rhythm section players who want a backing track without the bass, so they can play it themselves.
- Mixing students who want to hear how a low instrument sits with the kick drum.
Double bass or bass guitar?
An upright has a woody, round attack and a slight slide between notes. A bass guitar sounds tighter and more even. A recording can use either, and a model may treat them differently. If your song has an electric bass, use the Bass Remover. If you want the whole bowed section, try the Bowed Strings Extractor. The Cello Extractor covers the string that sits just above it.
FAQ
How much does it cost?
1 credit per minute of music, shown on the button before it runs. New accounts get 5 credits.
Does it work on a plucked jazz bass?
It is made for the double bass in any playing style, but quiet low notes under a busy mix can be hard to catch.
Why is some low sound still in the other file?
Low notes from a kick drum, synth bass or cello can overlap with the bass. Live and reverb-heavy recordings leave more.
What formats do I get?
MP3 at 320 kbps. Uploads can be MP3, WAV, M4A or FLAC.
