What a Rhodes is
The Rhodes is an electromechanical piano. Each key strikes a small metal tine, and a pickup turns that into sound. The result is soft and bell-like, with a gentle bark when played hard and a slow shimmer when a tremolo effect is on. Think late-night soul, 1970s jazz fusion, neo-soul, soft rock and a lot of modern R&B and lo-fi hip-hop, where the sound is imitated on purpose.
In a track it sits in the middle, playing chords or short comping figures. Because it is gentle, it often ends up half-hidden behind vocals, guitar and bass.
Who wants it alone
- Producers and beat makers who want a chord loop to chop. A Rhodes progression is one of the most sampled sounds in hip-hop.
- Keyboard players learning the voicings, which are often rich, jazzy chords.
- Music students who want to hear exactly what the part is doing.
- Video makers who want the Rhodes quieter under a voice.
If you take the Rhodes file to Audio to MIDI and pick Piano / keys, you get the chords as notes you can drop into your own sampler.
What it gets confused with
Rhodes is often mixed up with the other soft keyboards:
- Other electric pianos. Several instruments share a bell-like tone. The Electric Piano Extractor is the wider net.
- Acoustic piano. Brighter and sharper at the attack. See the Piano Extractor.
- Organ. Held chords with no decay. Try the Organ Extractor.
- Clavinet. Percussive and funky. See the Clavinet Extractor.
If the Rhodes is also playing with other keys, the Keyboard Extractor pulls them all out together.
FAQ
How much does it cost?
1 credit for every minute of the song, shown on the button before it runs. New accounts get 5 credits.
Will it find a Rhodes sound made with a plugin?
It listens for the sound, not the source. A plugin that imitates the tone may or may not be recognized, depending on how close it is.
Is it perfectly clean?
No. A quiet Rhodes behind a busy mix can leave leftovers in both files. Listen with headphones.
What formats can I upload and download?
Upload MP3, WAV, M4A or FLAC up to 10 minutes. The results download separately as MP3 at 320 kbps.
