How to extract the wind chimes from a song

  1. Upload the song. MP3, WAV, M4A or FLAC, up to 10 minutes. You sign in with Google the first time.
  2. Press Extract the wind chimes. It costs 1 credit for every minute of music, and the button shows the price before anything runs. New accounts start with 5 credits, enough for one song up to 5 minutes. Most songs take 1 to 3 minutes.
  3. Listen and download. You get two reels: Wind chimes and Without the wind chimes. Click one to hear only that file, then download it as an MP3 at 320 kbps. If processing fails, your credits are returned.

What wind chimes are, and what they sound like

Wind chimes are a set of small tubes or bars that hang from a frame and ring when they touch. In the studio, a player brushes a hand across them, or a bar tree is used for a rippling run, and the sound is a quick glissando of soft, high notes that fades away. It is a favorite "magic" effect in music: a dream sequence, a sparkle at the end of a phrase, a calm opening to a ballad, a fairy-tale or spa track.

This page is about the chimes as a musical sound. It has nothing to do with wind instruments such as flute or sax; for those use the Wind Instrument Extractor.

Who wants them alone

Producers sample one clean sweep and use it as a transition or a riser-style sparkle in their own tracks.

Video editors and sound designers use isolated chimes for a magical moment, a flashback, a calm scene or a wellness video.

Percussionists hear how a chime run is timed, whether it starts a bar or answers the end of a phrase.

What to expect

Wind chimes are light, high and fade quickly, and they share their range with cymbals, bells, synth pads and reverb tails. In a sparse song the chimes usually stand out. In a full mix, the Wind chimes file can be faint, short, or hold bits of other shimmering sounds such as a bell or a bright cymbal. In a recording with heavy reverb, a little of the chime tail may remain in the Without file. Listen to both with headphones before you build on them.

For all hand percussion at once, use the Percussion Extractor. For a single high ping, the Triangle Extractor may fit better. To list every instrument a song has, try the Every Instrument Splitter.
