How to extract the claps from a song

  1. Upload the song. MP3, WAV, M4A or FLAC, up to 10 minutes. You sign in with Google the first time.
  2. Press Extract the claps. It costs 1 credit for every minute of music, and the button shows the price before anything runs. New accounts start with 5 credits, enough for one song up to 5 minutes. Most songs take 1 to 3 minutes.
  3. Listen and download. The two reels are Clap and Without the clap. Click one to hear only that file, then download it as an MP3 at 320 kbps. If processing fails, your credits are returned.

Claps in a song

There are two kinds. A drum-machine clap is a short, snappy burst of noise, often placed with the snare on beats two and four in pop, hip-hop, house and trap. A hand clap is a real group of people clapping, common in gospel, folk and old soul records, often layered into several slightly different hits so it sounds like a room. This page is about the clap sound in the music. It is not for the applause of a crowd.

Who wants claps alone

Producers pull a clap from a record to sample and stack with their own snare, or remove the original so a new one fits.

Beat makers study how a clap sits against the snare. Hear the Clap file alone, then compare it with the drums.

Video editors use isolated claps for a rhythm cue, a reaction beat or a transition.

What to expect

A clap is short and sits in the same range as the snare, so the two often overlap. The extracted Clap file may carry a bit of the snare, and a quiet clap beneath loud guitars can come back faint. Records where the clap is clear and separate, as in electronic and pop, work best. A trace of the clap can remain in the Without file, especially when claps are layered with a snare.

To remove the whole kit, use the Drum Remover. To pull kick, snare and hi-hat apart, use the Drum Kit Splitter. For hand percussion in general, try the Percussion Extractor, and for the jingle of a Tambourine, the page for it.
