To separate instruments from a song, upload it to an AI splitter that returns each instrument as its own track. Our Every Instrument Splitter checks the song for more than 50 kinds of instruments and shows one row for each instrument it finds. Each row downloads as an MP3.

There are three ways to split, from quick to detailed. Here is how to choose.

Option 1: Six main parts

Start here if you are not sure. The stem splitter on our home page gives six parts:

  • Vocals
  • Drums
  • Bass
  • Guitar
  • Piano
  • Everything else

That covers most pop, rock and hip-hop songs. On our test, a 4 minute 44 second song split into six parts in 56 seconds and cost 5 credits.

If you only need the classic four (vocals, drums, bass, other), the 4-Stem Splitter gives exactly those.

Option 2: Every instrument

When a song has strings, horns, organ or other parts, six rows aren't enough. The "everything else" part holds them all together.

The Every Instrument Splitter looks for more than 50 instrument types. Only those that actually have sound appear. A four-piece rock band gives you a short list. An orchestral track gives you a long one.

Option 3: Split a part again

Sometimes you need detail inside one instrument. You can split a part further:

  • Drums into pieces. The Drum Kit Splitter gives kick, snare, toms, hi-hat, ride and crash, plus the full kit and a residual row.
  • Guitar by role. The Lead and Rhythm Guitar Splitter gives Lead guitar, Rhythm guitar, All guitars and Without guitars.
  • Vocals by layer. Lead and backing vocals can be split apart too.

How to separate every instrument, step by step

  1. Open the Every Instrument Splitter and sign in with Google. New accounts get 5 free credits, enough for one song up to 5 minutes.
  2. Upload an MP3, WAV, M4A or FLAC file, up to 10 minutes.
  3. Press Split the song. The price is on the button first: 1 credit per minute of music.
  4. Wait 1 to 3 minutes. Longer if the queue is busy.
  5. See which rows came back. Switch each one on or off and listen.
  6. Download the instruments you want as MP3s at 320 kbps.

The splitting runs in the cloud. There is nothing to install.

Which songs separate best

Separation is best when instruments have clear, different sounds. Expect great results on:

  • Studio recordings with a clean mix.
  • Songs with a few distinct instruments.
  • Tracks where each part plays in its own range.

Expect some bleed on:

  • Dense arrangements where many parts play the same notes.
  • Similar sounds side by side, like a synth pad and strings.
  • Heavy reverb and live recordings.

A little of one instrument in another's file is normal. Play the parts together and the traces usually vanish.

What to do with separated instruments

  • Study an arrangement. Hear exactly what each player did.
  • Learn a part. Solo the instrument and play along slowly.
  • Remix. Keep the parts you like and replace the rest.
  • Write it down. Turn a single part into notes with our free audio to MIDI converter. Clean, single-instrument files convert far better than a full mix.

Using separated parts for study and practice is fine. Publishing them needs permission from the people who own the song.

Cost and storage

Most tools cost 1 credit per minute. After the 5 free credits, packs start at $7.49 for 100 credits. Credits never expire. Your song and its parts stay in your account for 30 days, then they are deleted.

Six stems, every instrument, or a single tool?

If you only want one instrument, you don't need a full split. Each instrument has its own page in the instrument list, and each one gives that instrument alone plus the song without it.

Here is a quick way to decide:

All of these cost 1 credit per minute on most tools, and the price is always on the button before you start. Only the two Best Quality splitters cost more, at 4 and 6 credits a minute.

Line the parts up in a DAW

Every file you download starts at the same moment as the original song. Drag them all to the very start of the timeline, one per track, and they play in sync. Then mute, solo and mix them like a multitrack recording.
