How to convert MP4 to MIDI

  1. Choose the source type. Pick Vocals / humming, Piano / keys, Guitar, Bass or Full song to match the sound you want to transcribe.
  2. Select your MP4. Choose or drop a file up to 10 minutes long. The browser must be able to decode its audio track.
  3. Convert and compare. Press Convert to MIDI, watch the piano roll and switch between the original audio and the MIDI playback.
  4. Adjust and download. Change the note settings as needed, then download the .mid for your music software.

Conversion is free, requires no account and happens in your browser. The MP4 is not uploaded by the MIDI converter. Only the audio is analyzed: the MIDI file does not contain the video image or the recorded sound.

What works in an MP4 video?

An MP4 is a container that can hold different audio and video codecs. The converter passes the file to your browser's audio decoder; it does not guarantee that every MP4 will open. If your browser cannot decode the audio, export the soundtrack as WAV or MP3 and try WAV to MIDI or MP3 to MIDI. A MOV file can also be selected, but its codec must be supported by the browser.

Use a clip with a clear melody or one instrument. A recording of a piano demonstration, a sung phrase or an isolated bass part is easier to read than a video with music, speech and sound effects at once. The model looks for notes in the sound; it does not read the performer's fingers or interpret notation shown on screen.

A full song may produce overlapping or extra notes in a single result. If you have the right to use the audio and want one part, the stem splitter can isolate parts first. The Piano Extractor and Acapella Extractor are alternatives for those sources. Splitting uploads audio for cloud processing and costs credits. Get a cleaner transcription

Trim a long video to the section you need before converting. The limit is 10 minutes, and a short focused excerpt is easier to check. If you can export an isolated audio track from your editor, use that instead of a mix containing narration, reverb or background music. The M4A to MIDI and audio to MIDI guides cover audio-only files.

Choose Vocals / humming or Bass for a single line. Piano / keys and Guitar can retain chords. If the result misses notes, increase Note sensitivity; if there are many small unwanted notes, reduce it or raise Shortest note. The piano roll updates when you change the settings after conversion, so you can compare without running the model again.

Snap to beat can align notes when the tool detects a beat. Turn it off for a freely timed performance or if the grid does not match. Keep pitch bends can preserve some pitch movement in MIDI. Transpose shifts the notes before download. Listen to the Audio and MIDI modes and check difficult passages closely: a clear preview is useful, but it is not proof that every note is correct.

Use the MIDI after download

Import the .mid into a MIDI or software instrument track in Ableton Live, FL Studio, Logic Pro or GarageBand. Assign an instrument, then compare the notes against the original recording. Correct pitch, timing and note length in the piano roll. The MIDI contains musical events, not the MP4's video or recorded instrument sound.

For a score, open the MIDI in MuseScore or another notation program. You may need to adjust rhythm, rests and voices before printing. Keep the original MP4 as a reference; exporting MIDI does not replace it. Learn more about what MIDI files contain and making MIDI from a song.

Choose a useful section of video

A video recording may contain several different sounds in the same moment: a person talking over a demonstration, a backing track under an instrument, or room noise between phrases. Choose the section where the part you need is clearest. If you have the original editing project, export the instrument or voice by itself. Reducing effects before export can make the note attacks easier to hear.

If a long clip contains many separate ideas, make a short audio export for each phrase. Keep enough space at the edges to include the first attack and the end of the last sustained note. Convert the sections separately and name the downloaded files so you can find them in your project. The file duration limit applies to each input.

After import into your DAW, listen with the original audio at a comfortable level. Compare the beginning of each note, then correct pitches and durations. A video soundtrack can be expressive and loosely timed, so an automatic beat grid may not match every phrase. Leave snap off when the original timing is more useful than a rigid grid.

FAQ

Is MP4 to MIDI free?

Yes. Conversion, preview and MIDI download are free without sign-up. Optional stem splitting uses credits.

Does the MIDI contain the video?

No. The tool analyzes the audio track and produces note data, not video or recorded sound.

Can every MP4 be decoded?

No. MP4 files can use different codecs, and browser support varies. Export the audio as WAV or MP3 if your browser cannot decode it.

Is the video uploaded?

No. The free MIDI conversion happens in your browser. The separate stem splitter uploads audio for cloud processing.

Can I convert a whole song in a video?

You can try a file up to 10 minutes, but multiple instruments and speech can produce cluttered notes. Isolate the part you need for a cleaner starting point.

Can I use the result as sheet music?

Import the MIDI into notation software such as MuseScore and edit the score. Automatic transcription may need substantial correction.
