To remove background music from a video, take the audio out of the video, split that audio into separate dialogue, music and effects files, then put only the parts you want back under the picture. The splitting step is what most editors cannot do on their own. Our Dialogue, Music and Effects Splitter does it in the cloud, with nothing to install.

One thing to know first: our tools take audio files, not video files. You export the soundtrack, clean it, and bring it back. It sounds like extra work, but it takes a few minutes.

Why you can't just turn the music down

In a finished video, the voice and the music are usually mixed into one track. Turning the volume down lowers both. An equalizer can cut some frequencies, but speech and music share most of the same range, so the voice gets thin before the music goes away.

You need something that can tell a voice from a guitar or a drum. That is what AI separation does. It listens to the mix and rebuilds each part as its own file.

Step 1: Export the audio from your video

Open the video in the editor you already use. Almost every editor can export or share the audio on its own.

  • Pick WAV if you can. It keeps the full quality.
  • MP3 works too. Pick the highest quality offered.
  • Keep the clip under 10 minutes, which is our upload limit. A longer video can be exported in parts.

If the editor shows the audio as a separate track, check that you export the whole soundtrack, from the very first frame. That makes it easy to line up later.

Step 2: Split the soundtrack into three parts

  1. Open the Dialogue, Music and Effects Splitter and sign in with Google. New accounts get 5 free credits, enough for 5 minutes of audio.
  2. Upload your MP3, WAV, M4A or FLAC file.
  3. Press Split dialogue, music and effects. The price shows on the button before anything runs: 1 credit per minute.
  4. Wait a minute or two. Most files take 1 to 3 minutes.
  5. Three reels appear: Dialogue, Music and Sound effects. Click a reel to hear only that part.
  6. Download the files you need. Each one is an MP3 at 320 kbps.

For most "remove the music" jobs you keep Dialogue and Sound effects. Footsteps, doors and traffic make a scene feel real, so dropping them can sound odd.

Step 3: Put the clean audio back under the video

  1. In your editor, mute or delete the original audio track.
  2. Import the Dialogue file, and the Sound effects file if you want it.
  3. Drag each file to the very start of the timeline, so it lines up with the first frame.
  4. Play a section with clear lip movement and check the sync.
  5. Add new music if you want it, at a lower level than the voice.

If the voice now sounds a little hollow, that is normal. Music often hides small flaws in a recording. You can clean them up with the Vocal Noise Remover for hiss and hum, or the Reverb Remover if the room sounds echoey.

What results to expect

Separation is very good on talking-head videos, interviews and vlogs with music under them. It is harder when someone sings, because singing is a voice too. In that case the singer may land in the Dialogue file.

Loud music right on top of quiet speech can leave a faint trace of music in the Dialogue file. Listen with headphones before you publish. If a short section is messy, it is often easier to cut that bit than to fix it.

If the video is a song and you want the singer without the band, this is the wrong tool. Use the Acapella Extractor instead.

People often remove background music because a platform flagged a song in their video. Removing the music from your own footage is a normal edit. We can't promise it clears any claim, because each platform checks in its own way.

If the video itself is not yours, you still need the owner's permission to publish it. Separation does not change who owns the content.

Cost and files

Most of our tools cost 1 credit per minute of audio, and the price is always on the button before you press it. After the 5 free credits, credit packs start at $7.49 for 100 credits. Credits are a one-time purchase and never expire.

Your upload and results stay in your account for 30 days, then they are deleted. Download the files you want to keep. You can delete a song yourself at any time, and its files go straight away.

FAQ

Can I upload a video file directly?

No. Our tools take audio files only: MP3, WAV, M4A or FLAC, up to 10 minutes. Export the audio from your video editor first, then upload it to the Dialogue, Music and Effects Splitter.

Will the voice sound exactly like the original?

It sounds close, but not always perfect. Speech over soft music separates well. Loud music over quiet speech can leave a faint trace. Listen to the Dialogue file before you use it.

How much does it cost?

1 credit per minute of audio. New accounts get 5 free credits with Google sign-in, no card. After that, packs start at $7.49 for 100 credits.

What format are the files?

Each file downloads as an MP3 at 320 kbps. Video editors import MP3 without any trouble.

Can I keep the sound effects but remove the music?

Yes. You get three files, so keep Dialogue and Sound effects and leave Music out. That keeps footsteps and room sounds that make the scene feel natural.
