How to extract the vibraphone from a song

1. Upload the song. MP3, WAV, M4A or FLAC, up to 10 minutes. The first time, you sign in with Google.

The vibes in a song

The vibraphone has metal bars and a motor that spins discs in the resonators to give a slow wobble, the vibrato in its name. The result is a smooth, cool sound that people link to jazz, lounge music, film noir and mellow pop. Mallets can hit the bars hard or play soft chords, and a pedal lets the notes ring.

A jazz vibes player can use the Vibraphone file to learn a solo or a comping pattern. A producer can lift a chord stab for a late-night sample. A video editor can remove it from a cue when it is too mellow for the picture.

Vibraphone, marimba or keys?

The sustain makes it blurry

Because notes ring on, a vibraphone line overlaps with itself and with a jazz piano or guitar. In a trio with piano and vibes, expect each to leak a little into the other. Listen to both files with headphones, and use the notes as a guide, since the sustain and vibrato can be tough to put into Audio to MIDI.
