  3. Play each reel. The left reel is your original; the other two are Marimba and Without the marimba. Click a reel to solo it, and download whichever you need as a 320 kbps MP3.

What the marimba does

The marimba is a wooden bar instrument with resonator tubes that give each note a warm, round tone. In pop it is the soft, bubbly pattern in the verse. In Latin and world music it is a main voice, and in film and TV scores it adds a gentle pulse. It is played with mallets, so every note has a quick attack and a short, mellow decay.

A marimba player can use the Marimba file to learn the patterns, which are often fast and repeating. A producer who loves a tropical groove can lift it for sampling. Without the marimba makes a track simpler for a voiceover.

Marimba or xylophone?

Marimba sounds deeper and softer, and xylophone is drier and brighter. They get confused often, and on a quick, repeating line the two can look alike on a waveform. Compare with the Xylophone Extractor. Vibraphone has metal bars and a sustained, shimmering tone, so try the Vibraphone Extractor, and the Glockenspiel Extractor for small, high, bell-like bars. Other tuned sounds are on the Celesta Extractor and Metal Bars Extractor.

Turn the pattern into MIDI

A repeating marimba line is a good candidate for Audio to MIDI. Pick Piano / keys, since the notes are single, struck and clear.
