To make an acapella from a song, run the track through an AI vocal extractor, download the vocal file, then clean and prepare it for your project. Our Acapella Extractor does the first part in about a minute and gives you two files: Vocals and Instrumental. The rest of this guide covers what to do with the vocal so it sits well in a remix.
If you want to know where the word comes from, see what does acapella mean.
The quality of your acapella depends on what you upload.
- Use a WAV or a high-quality MP3. Low-bitrate files have damage you can hear once the music is gone.
- Use the studio version, not a live one. Crowd noise ends up in the vocal.
- Pick songs where the voice is clear and up front. Those separate best.
- Open the Acapella Extractor and sign in with Google. New accounts get 5 free credits, enough for one song up to 5 minutes.
- Upload an MP3, WAV, M4A or FLAC file, up to 10 minutes.
- Press Extract the vocals. The price shows on the button first: 1 credit per minute of song.
- Wait a minute or two. Click the Vocals reel to hear the voice alone.
- Download it as an MP3 at 320 kbps. For a 4 minute 44 second song, each file is about 10.9 MB.
Keep the Instrumental too. It is handy for checking timing later.
The Vocals file holds every voice: lead, harmonies and doubles. For a mashup that is often what you want. Sometimes it is too busy.
If you only want the lead singer, use Separate Lead and Backing Vocals. You get the lead vocal and the backing vocals as separate files, plus two more mixes. A clean lead line is easier to fit over a new track.
Listen on headphones from start to finish. Common leftovers and fixes:
- Hi-hat or snare ticks at loud moments. Cut them out in the gaps between lines, or lower the level there.
- Too much echo. If the original had heavy reverb, the Reverb Remover can dry the voice out. A dry acapella is easier to blend with your own effects.
- Silence that isn't silent. Use a gate or simply cut the gaps between phrases.
Don't chase perfection. Small traces usually disappear once your new beat plays under the voice.
To fit an acapella into another track, you need two facts about it.
- Tempo (BPM). Tap along in your DAW, or check the original song's tempo. Make sure the downloaded vocal starts at the very beginning of the song, so the timing grid lines up.
- Key. You can find it by ear. Our guide on how to find the key of a song shows a simple method.
Most DAWs can stretch time and shift pitch. Small changes sound natural. Big ones, like moving a voice up several semitones, start to sound odd.
- Place the vocal at the start of the timeline in the original tempo first.
- Set your project to the target tempo and let the DAW stretch the vocal.
- Shift the pitch if the keys clash.
- Add your own reverb and delay so the voice matches the new track.
Then mix as usual. A little compression helps the vocal sit with the beat.
Making an acapella to practice or learn production is fine. Releasing a remix or mashup that uses someone else's vocal needs permission from the people who own the song. Some artists release official acapellas for remix contests. Those come with their own rules.
The Acapella Extractor costs 1 credit per minute of song. After the 5 free credits, packs start at $7.49 for 100 credits, about $0.30 for a 4-minute song. Credits never expire, and failed jobs are refunded.
| Problem | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|
| Faint drums under the voice | Loud snare or cymbals in the original | Cut or lower the gaps between lines |
| Voice sounds far away | Heavy reverb on the original vocal | Run the Vocals file through the Reverb Remover |
| Voice drifts off the beat | Original tempo changes, or the file was trimmed | Re-download, and keep the start of the song intact |
| Harsh, swishy "s" sounds | Low-quality source file | Start from a better copy of the song |
| Two singers fighting | Lead and harmonies both kept | Use Separate Lead and Backing Vocals |
